What is Bone Meal?

Bone meal, an organic slow release fertilizer which is a mixture of finely ground animal bones and waste products from slaughter-houses. It is rich in phosphorus, calcium and protein.

Bone Meal as Fertilizer:

Bone meal can be added in any kind of indoor and kitchen garden plants. It is helpful for healthy root development and flower growth. 

N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) ratio in the bone meal can vary from 3-15-0 to 2-22-0 depending on the source. We should have acidic soil for best benefits from bone meal. In terms of pH the soil pH should be less than 7 for the best results from bone meal.

Bone meal is a slow release fertilizer that takes around 3 to 4 months to break down into the soil and display some impact. But bone meal creates a consistent food supply for the microbes available in the soil that helps in the overall growth of your plant.

Bone Meal for Succulents

Bone meal is one the best fertilizer for succulents and cacti. We have noticed that most of our succulents die because of root rot.  Bone meal helps in root development of the succulents and keeps them healthy.

Things to remember in using the Bone Meal

  • One table teaspoon of bone meal is sufficient for the 12 inch of pot. Make the ratio of bone meal accordingly if you are using bigger or smaller pots. 
  • If you are using bone meal in the garden 1 teaspoon per square ft is sufficient
  • Do not overdose it to your plant.
  • Bone meal is slow release fertilizer so it will have long term benefits.
  • pH of the soil should be acidic when you are using bone meal.
