Largest and oldest botanical garden of India: Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden
Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden is known by many names such as Indian Botanic Garden, Calcutta Botanic Garden, Royal Botanic Garden, Calcutta. This garden is spread over 109 hectares and has more than 12,000 plant species.
These gardens are located in Shibpur, Howrah, Kolkata were founded in 1786 by Colonel Robert Kyd who was an army officer in British East India Company.
Kolkata Botanical Garden is known for:
- “The Great Banyan” tree which is spread more than 330 metres in circumference.
- Collection of orchids
- Different varieties of bamboo
- Palm Trees
- Plants of the screw pine genus.
